Kakadu Day 2 – afternoon at Nourlangie Rock (25th August, 2011)

As we had got up so early and the cruise was over by 9am we packed up and headed further north to camp and to have a look at Nourlangie Rock. Apparently this rock was used as the lookout in the Crocodile Dundee films and is a sacred site for the Arboriginal people with many examples of the 5000 year old paintings on the rock faces.
Nourlangie Rock is part of the sandstone plateau skirting Arnhemland and  is typical of the scenery of Kakadu. The vast scale of these rock outcrops is amazing and yet again we felt humbled by the sheer beauty of the landscape of this region.

Rock art depicts the ancestry and spirituality of the lands

Hey that's a big rock behind you!

Many of the artworks are done under cool rock overhangs to preserve them
