The Curtain Fig and Platypus heaven at Tarzali Lakes, Atherton Tablelands, QLD (2nd August 2011)

We visited The Curtain Fig tree which stands over 30 metres tall and about 20 metres spread, and so called due to its curtain like vines. This is the Strangler Fig that has literally strangled its host tree over many years until the host tree is consumed and no longer exists.  We also headed to Tarzali Lakes where we had been told heard about more wild Duckbilled Platypus that can be seen during the day. In fact its the females who do nothing but eat all day (diving for crustaceans and then surfacing for only a few seconds, before diving again) apparently whilst the males only come out early morning and late afternoon. We saw about five individual ones in separate areas of these lakes, swimming amongst lily pads, really lovely little creatures. We also saw another Azure Kingfisher and caught it on camera albeit at a distance!

Curtain Fig Tree is so big you can't fit it all into photo!

Seconds before she dives back under!

As close as we could get the Azure Kingfisher
