Waterfalls and termite mounds in Litchfield National Park, Top End, NT (13-14th August 2011)

Only a few days before we meet up with Barry and family so we thought we would check out Litchfield National Park renowned for its waterfalls and safe swimming holes (safe because we are now well and truly in crocodile territory….and you don’t mess about especially when there are Salties (Saltwater Crocs) about!). The waterfalls are spectacular – Wangi Falls, Tolmer Falls and Florence Falls all in full flow despite it being the Dry Season and temperatures up to 35 deg now!! Buley Rockhole forms lots of rock pools that you can swim in along part of the river bed system near Florence Falls. We saw little rock wallabies too….definitely coming back with the Chinns!
Last but not least we visited the amazing Magnetic Termite Mounds so called because termites always align their ‘mounds’ which are actually more like gravestones to a north south direction. No one knows why they do this as they are so different to the Savannah Termite Mounds that are actually indented mounds creating cool areas within which the termites stay in during the heat of the day. These mounds are as hard as concrete. Fascinating stuff!

Spectacular Florence Falls - local swimming pool on a Sunday for local Darwinians!
