Driving further north we are now less than 650km from Darwin so we turned right at the town of Katherine into Nitmulik National Park to the campground close to Katherine Gorge to stay for two nights to sus it out before we probably go again with Barry and family when they arrive next week. This is a really good campsite in the national park complete with a pool (very well run by the Aboriginal foundation called Nitmiluk Tours)….much needed dip in this heat…now up to 33 deg! The campsite being in the heart of the national park comes with lots of wildlife including friendly kangaroos, lots of birds and, those smelly fruit bats have turned up again but luckily kept their distance at the edge of the campsite!
We walked the Southern Track circuit to look into Katherine Gorge from the lookout on the 12th August and the scenery is spectacular. We’ll wait for the Chinns before we go on any river cruises or kayaking that takes you right into the steep gorges to see the waterfalls next week. The walk was hot but worth it for the views! Saw trees full of more of those big fruit bats along the way, they call them Flying Foxes here!
