Normanton home of the Gulflander and Krys the Savannah King (5th August, 2011)

Normanton is an outback town right at the top of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland and its remote to say the least! There’s not alot here apart from one main street, a large model of a barramundi (called the Big Barra) and a few historic buildings but it is home to the largest true size replica crocodile ever caught called Krys the Savannah King caught at nearby Karumba in the 1980’s. It is a massive 8.3 metres long! Glad we did’nt see it alive!

Crikey look at the size of its mouth!!

One I caught earlier!

Normanton is also home to the famous Gulflander train that ran between Normanton and a town 300km further east called Croydon during the late 1800’s. The station at Normanton was built in 1860 but closed during the mid 1900’s. The station still stands today with its historic platforms and station offices and the Gulflander train still stands on the tracks. The train station was built almost at the same time the unfortunate explorers Burke and Wills died trying to find a route to the ocean.

A long wait for the train mate!
