We set off at 7am put in another 6 hour drive along the Matilda Highway past Burke and Wills Roadhouse ( the Matilda Highway follows their route of exploration in 1860’s) to get to Mount Isa on the Barkly Highway. Again the roads seem straight and endless disappearing in the distance to mirage so that you can’t tell if anything is coming towards you and its hot and dusty ( and these are sealed roads!). The landscape did become more hilly and interesting as we headed further south though. Again cattle wander onto the road, and those bouncy kangaroos are active particularly at this early hour – they unexpectedly decide they want to go to bed on the other side of the road! As you can imagine we had to keep both sets of eyes peeled for the little blighters!
